Location of Kazan in Tatarstan
Kazan (Russian: Казань; Tatar: Казан) is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and one of the largest cities in Russia, ranking eighth among the biggest cities in the Russian Federation. The city is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers in European Russia.
The Kazan Kremlin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In April 2009, the Russian Patent Office granted Kazan the right to declare itself as "Russia’s third capital." That same year, Kazan was also recognized as the "Sports Capital of Russia."
As of the 1979 census, the city's population reached one million, with the majority being Muslims.
